Top Floor of Colosseum Opens in Rome
Just in time for the holidays, the Colosseum’s quinto ordine, or top fifth floor, has been renovated and finally opened to the public in early November.
The ongoing 1.6-million-dollar restoration project is being sponsored by fashion brand Tod’s. The newly opened floor offers the best view of the entire stadium and one of the best of Rome’s skyline, situated 130 feet above the arena floor. Italian culture minister, Dario Franceschini called this a “unique view in a monument that’s the symbol of Italy to the wider world.”
Back in it's heyday, the fifth floor housed the cheap seats reserved for the “plebs,” with restricted views of the action. Today, it’s exposed to the elements, giving you an intense sense of depth, thanks to the 270 degree panoramas.
Rome’s iconic amphitheater held 6.4 million visitors last year alone. It is now holding official guided group tours as the only way to get you to the top- where you can almost hear the roars from 80 A.D.!
