Admittedly, the Sicilian infrastructure in this southeastern quarter needs a bit of work. The two-lane “autostrada”, or highway, links Messina to Noto on the eastern coast and is in good shape. However, after Noto, travelers driving clockwise around the island need to be prepared for the overly used two-lane road with limited passing lanes that are filled with erratic drivers dangerously passing the slower vehicles. Upon reaching the back roads near the Val di Noto, visitors are rewarded with a view of the simplicity of the Sicilian countryside. It is easy to see how it lured the ancient Greeks to call this area home and to create the settlement of Eloro here.

Everyone heading to Sicily should stay a few days in a “baglio” at least once. A baglio is a fortified farm, constructed in stone, built as a mini fortress to protect a farmer and his family from the onslaught of invaders and raiders that plagued the island for millenea.
