Ordering Caffè in Italy: A Guide for Your Luxe Travel Experience

When you find yourself wandering the charming streets of Italy, whether in bustling Roma or the romantic canals of Venezia, there's one experience you simply cannot miss: ordering a caffè. The Italian coffee culture is rich and deeply woven into the daily lives of its people.

Knowing how to order an Italian coffee the right way will give you the fuel and energy for when you are traveling around Italy during one of our Italian Concierge customized trips for you!

Understanding Italian Coffee Orders

First things first, let’s clarify some common terms you might encounter:

Caffè: This is usually referred to as an espresso (not EXpresso), the foundation of Italian coffee. Don’t ask for a "regular coffee," as you’ll receive a confused look from the barista.

Cappuccino: A delightful mix of one part espresso, one part steamed milk, and one part milk foam. Traditionally, it's only served in the morning.

Latte: In Italy, if you order a "latte," you will just get milk! Always specify "caffè latte" to enjoy a coffee with your milk.

Macchiato: An espresso "stained" with a little bit of milk. It’s perfect for those who want a stronger coffee flavor.

How to Order

When you're ready to place your order, it’s all about confidence! Here’s a simple approach:

1. Approach the bar counter, or as Italians refer to this as the banco, as in Italy, most people enjoy their caffè standing up.

2. Greet the barista with a friendly “Buongiorno” (Good morning) or “Buonasera” (Good evening).

3. Clearly state your order, for example, “Un caffè, per favore” (A coffee, please) or “Un cappuccino, per favore” (A cappucciono, please).

4. Keep in mind that paying at the register before enjoying your drink a common practice in Italy!  This enables you to stand and drink your beverage.

5. Remember, Italians love a good conversation, so don’t be afraid to ask the barista for recommendations or share a compliment.

Italian Cultural Etiquette to Experience Italy Like Never Before

In Italy, it's not customary to sip your caffè slowly. Instead, take a moment to enjoy it, then move on with your day. And no need to ask for your caffè to-go; it's best savored in the moment.

Now that you know the ins and outs of ordering caffè in Italy, it’s time to immerse yourself in the rich culture of this beautiful country. Imagine sipping your espresso at a picturesque caffé while soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of a classic Italian piazza!
