PORTOFINO – Italy’s other  colorful harbor

04 MARCH 2025

Often confused with it’s Southern cousin Positano,  Portofino is located in Liguria  north of Tuscany  and is an equally beautiful stop for a  three-day stay. Portofino is much less crowded  than Positano as the road dead ends at the village and traffic comes to a halt.  Better to take you sailing vessel and moor out in the bay .  This is no  fishing village any longer. Her harbor is flanked by many luxury shops and is often a venue selected for high end fashion shoots.

Nice touring days along this coastline  can take you to  Santa Margherita Ligure, Camogli to Sestri Levante  where you are cradled by the macchia mediterranea and eventually and the steep Apennine Mountains towards the east. One can hike for days between Santa Margherita Ligure  all the way  down the coast to Portovenere.   Just north of Portofino promontory lies colorful Camogli, where every year on the second weekend in May this colorful seaside town hosts a humongous fish fry. Day excursions from the Ligurian coast often  include visits to the well-known area of the  Cinque Terre  and  to  the city of Genova la superba.   Once one of the Mariner Republics who commanded the seas along with Venice, Amalfi, and Pisa .

To expand your vacation consider that the Italian Riviera  in Liguria can sync nicely with  the regions of Tuscany and Piedmont to make a 9-day vacation.
