There is not much that compares to the salt air on the Riviera, be it the Italian or the French one: Côte or Costiera.

One is guaranteed to drink regional wines such as:

• Crisp whites from Vermentino produced along the Ligurian coastline from Ventimiglia, Cinque Terre to Luni (Roman Archaeological site) in Italy

Call it what you will: Cacciucco Livornese or Bouillabaisse—both are considered tasty regional plates of fresh fish served in a tomato-based broth, which sets the tone for your evening, served with crusty bread after a day of sun and sea. Add in a healthy walk on a path near the sea—in this case Cape Ferrat, near Saint-Tropez, or the famous Santa Margherita Ligure to Portofino—and you have a five-star day.

These areas are filled with sun lovers once schools let out for summer holidays and are where many northern Europeans vacation. But do not be caught up in that confluence of travelers. We suggest taking a ten-day break a month before June or after September to still find pleasant weather and fewer crowds. Prices will not be reduced just yet; not until the last week in October have we seen prices decrease a bit.

One can even fly into or out of Nice (NCE) on nonstop flights from Newark, USA, on United.
